Important Details To Help You Prep Before You Arrive

June 5, 2009

TO ALL PARTICIPANTS IN OUR SALT 2009 CONFERENCE

Again we all say how happy we are that so many of you are joining us in Jackson, Mississippi, at Belhaven College for our InterVarsity SALT Conference. This email contains important information on what to expect upon arrival and during the conference and what to bring with you for our five days together so that your time at the Conference is most productive and beneficial.

HOUSING?
We’ll all be staying at a new dormitory at Belhaven College, and we’ll be sleeping two-to-a-room. Because this is a student dorm, the college will not supply bedding, pillows, or towels.

DO NOT FORGET: BRING A SET OF SHEETS (EXTRA LONG TWIN), A PILLOW AND WHATEVER TOWELS/WASHCLOTHS/SOAP YOU’LL NEED

The dorm will be air-conditioned, so you might want to bring a light blanket for your bed as well.

PARKING?
For those who will be driving, parking at the college is free and you’ll be told where to park when you register.

REGISTRATION?
Please proceed to Gillespie Hall (1500 Peachtree Street) for registration.

WEATHER?
The temperature in Mississippi in June can be very warm and very humid, so you’ll want to have some light clothes with you for your time outdoors. On the other hand, everything indoors is air-conditioned, so please bring sweaters or pull-overs for the times we’re in our meetings. Most of us will want to walk (10 to 15 minutes from the dorm to our meeting rooms) so you’ll probably want comfortable shoes as well. The meetings will be very informal and casual, so dress clothes are not necessary.

WHAT TO BRING?

  • Toiletries (you may want to bring shower shoes or flip-flops to use in the shower)
  • Bibles, journals, writing/note-taking materials
  • Bring any musical instruments and music, art portfolios (disk form or actual) as well as sketch books/drawing material, dance shoes and clothing, media & film DVDs, cameras for film & photography, any writing materials (poetry/fiction/articles) that you’ve written or just things to share, monologues or scenes, etc. The music practice rooms and art studios will be available to you throughout the conference.
  • Any books or resources on arts and God that you’d like to share
  • Laptops (optional – there will be wireless internet access available)
  • There will also be tennis courts and a soccer field available to you to use during your free time.

WHAT WILL HAPPEN?

  • We’ll eat all meals in the Belhaven College Cafeteria: breakfast, lunch and dinner. IF YOU HAVE NOT ALREADY DONE SO, PLEASE LET US KNOW ABOUT ANY SPECIAL FOOD CONCERNS.
  • Each day, there will be a free time for you to practice, paint, write, take photographs or film — or talk to folks informally — or just to take a nap.
  • Each day, there will be a morning, afternoon and evening session — and most of these will involve significant discussion time.

We’re eager and excited to see you next week! If you have any questions about registration or onsite logistics, please contact Kylene Hong at SALTregistrar@gmail.com.

God bless you!

Colin Harbinson, SALT 09 Conference Director
Dick Ryan, SALT 09 Conference Coordinator
